Enrolments pour in for free security course – 2014

Enrolments pour in for free security course

IT Masters and Charles Sturt University have been flooded with enrolments for the Network Security Administrator free short course starting 23 January that sets students on the road to obtaining the EC-Council Network Security Administrator (ENSA) certification.

The course covers the first five weeks of the subject ITI581: Network Security Fundamentals in the Master of Information Systems Security at Charles Sturt University, which is based on the EC-Council Certified Network Administrator certification (ENSA). It’s delivered by one of the world’s most popular and motivational cyber security presenters, Erdal Ozkaya, who we profiled in December.

The free short course is aimed at system administrators, network administrators and anyone who is interested in network security technologies. It will comprise five weekly live lectures delivered via webinars with recordings of the webinars being available for those unable to make the live events.

According to Sean Lim, VP of EC-Council, the ENSA program provides information security training from a defensive perspective. It teaches students about firewalls and how to configure them, about intrusion detections systems, how to create security policies, design secure networks, apply networks controls and protect against data leaks, etc.

Lim says this makes the program suitable for people who manage and work with network technologies, including those who may have a Cisco CCNA certification.

ENSA is a precursor to the EC-Council‘s CEH certification that focuses on network security from an offensive perspective: applying security skills and knowledge to hack into systems in order to determine their weaknesses.

IT Masters CEO, Martin Hale, said: “I am not surprised by the level of interest, because a recent study by Cisco showed that there is currently a global shortage of over a million cyber security professionals. Vulnerability and threat levels are at record highs and in my opinion this course covers the absolute minimum knowledge base that anyone working in computer support should have.”

Hale added: “Over the years I have talked to many IT support professionals who say they are going to update their security skills but never quite get around to it. I understand how busy they are, but I am sure that their company’s board of directors would be uncomfortable if they knew that the people supporting their network were not making cyber security a priority.”

Applications for the course have been pouring in from all over the world. “One thing that initially surprised us was the fact that a much higher proportion of enrolments than normal were coming from the USA,” said Hale.

“We think the high level of interest is because the United States Government National Security Agency (NSA) and the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) has certified the Network Security Administrator course (ENSA) as meeting the 4011 Training Standard for Information Security Professionals. They join a growing list of international security agencies that are endorsing EC-Council; and more than 60,000 IT professionals have gained its certifications.”
